Do You Have to Buy Commercial Food for Hamsters?

hamster's food and water

Hamsters are cute, fun pets to have. They can be very energetic and affectionate, and they will get used to you if you spend time with them. Hamsters need proper care, but they don’t require much special equipment beyond their cage and food bowl.

You’ve just adopted a hamster, but you don’t know what to feed it. Or maybe you have some yummy homemade hamster food but you’re nervous about whether it’s a good diet or not, or you don’t know if you have to buy commercial food for your hamster.

You do not need to buy commercial food for your hamster. While there are many commercial foods available for hamsters, many people prefer to make their own homemade recipes instead.

These recipes can be made with easily-available ingredients and don’t require any special cooking skills or equipment.

Hamsters can live on a variety of different foods, including fruits and vegetables. However, most people prefer not to feed their hamsters this way because it’s difficult to get the right balance of nutrients. Instead, they buy commercial hamster food from a pet store or online retailer.

Why You Should Give Your Hamster Homemade Food

You may be wondering why you should give your hamster homemade food. The answer is simple: it’s better for them.

1. It is cheaper

If you make your own hamster food, it will cost less than buying it from a pet store. You can buy all the necessary ingredients in bulk and save money that way as well.

This also helps to ensure that there is not too much of any one ingredient in the mix and that your hamster gets all the nutrients he needs.

2. It is healthier

When you make homemade hamster food, you know exactly what goes into it. You can make sure there are no preservatives or other additives that might be harmful to your pet. You can also choose healthy choices like fruits and vegetables instead of processed foods that may not be good for him.

3. You have the full control

Your hamster will always be healthier when given fresh and natural foods because it contains all the essential nutrients that he or she needs for a healthy life.

You can make sure that the ingredients are safe for consumption by checking their labels and making sure that they don’t contain any harmful chemicals or preservatives.

4. You can customize it based on what your hamster likes

You can customize it based on what your hamster likes and what he needs nutritionally. If your hamster is picky or doesn’t like certain foods, you can try different combinations until you find one that works for him. You can also add supplements or vitamins to make sure he’s getting enough nutrients from his diet.

5. It doesn’t contain any fillers or other chemicals

Commercial pet foods contain a lot of fillers and preservatives that can be harmful to your hamster’s health. These ingredients can cause allergic reactions, digestive problems, and even obesity in some cases.

You don’t want to feed your pet something that could potentially harm them in any way, especially when it comes to something as important as their diet.

What Should I Do if My Hamster Does Not Eat Her Pellets?

1. Make sure it is not old or moldy.

If it has been a few days, try changing the brands or flavors of food. If you have been using the same brand and flavor for months, try switching to a different brand or flavor.

There are many types of hamster food out there, so if your hamster doesn’t like one type then try another.

2. Make sure that you are giving your hamster fresh water every day.

Hamsters can live off of just their food for weeks at a time, but they need fresh water every day to stay hydrated and healthy.

If you are having trouble getting your hamster to drink enough water, try adding some sugar or flavoring to her water dish so that she will be more likely to drink it!

If none of these things work, then unfortunately your hamster may be sick with something serious that is causing him not to eat his pellets anymore.

This could be anything from diabetes to cancer or even an infection in his stomach lining causing him pain when he eats pellets.

Why Doesn’t My Hamster Eat the Fruits that I Give Her?

It’s important to remember that hamsters are not always hungry, especially when they’re sleeping or running around.

They may also be picky about what they eat, so you’ll need to experiment and see which foods your hamster prefers. If you want your hamster to eat more fruits, try giving them a variety of fruit pieces instead of just one type at a time.

Fruit isn’t the only food for hamsters, they can also eat seeds and cereals, but these kinds of foods should only be given in limited quantities because they aren’t as nutritious as other types of food.

Hamsters who are fed mainly on commercial pellets will do fine eating only those pellets; however, if you give them some fruit or other supplements every once in a while (such as once per week), they’ll be able to get all their nutritional needs met without getting sick from too much sugar or salt content in their diet.

How Many Times a Day Do You Feed a Hamster?

When it comes to feeding your hamster, you want to be sure they’re getting the right amount of food.

The more often you feed a hamster, the less likely they are to overeat and become overweight. To prevent this from happening, make sure you feed your hamster at least once a day and stick with a consistent schedule so that he or she knows when dinner is coming.

For younger hamsters (under 6 months), 1/8 cup of food will suffice; for older ones (over 6 months), go up to 1/4 cup of food per day.

You can also give them treats like pieces of fruit or veggies in addition to their daily rations if you’d like, just don’t overdo it.

Wrapping Up

In the end, you really do not have to buy prepared food for your hamster. You can make your own food, and use some less expensive items in your kitchen.

It is actually better to make your own hamster food because then you know what ingredients are going into it, instead of relying on a manufacturer’s list.

How Much Food to Give Dwarf Hamster?

restock hamster food

Knowing how much food to put in your hamster’s cage can be overwhelming, especially for people who don’t have a lot of experience with hamsters.

Guides and charts often provide conflicting information! If you’re searching for how much food to give a dwarf hamster, you are likely realizing that it is more than you expected.

You will likely realize that it is more than you expected If you’re searching for how much food to give a dwarf hamster.

Adult dwarf hamsters need about a teaspoon of food per day.  You’ll want to feed your dwarf hamster a variety of healthy foods and treats. Hamsters love to eat, so it’s important to keep the food bowl full and varied.

If you’re not sure how much food you should give your hamster, here are some guidelines:

  • Adult dwarf hamsters need about 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of food per day (about 1/8th cup).
  • Juvenile and baby dwarf hamsters need about half as much as adults — about half a teaspoon (2 grams) per day (about 1/16th cup).

How Often Do I Feed My Hamster?

Younger hamsters need to be fed more frequently than older ones because they are growing quickly. Older hamsters don’t need to eat as often because their bodies aren’t working as hard to keep them alive, so they don’t burn through energy as quickly as young ones do.

The recommended amount of food for a Syrian hamster is 1/4 cup per day. This is a good rule of thumb for any type of hamster, but it’s always a good idea to ask your vet or breeder about how often and how much to feed your hamster.

If your hamster is pregnant or nursing, it may need more food than usual. The same goes if you have an older hamster that isn’t as active anymore.

In general, though, the amount of food your hamster needs will depend on its age and size. Hamsters are nocturnal animals that eat at night, so it can be difficult to keep track of how much they’re eating in one sitting.

If you have more than one hamster in your cage and they’re eating different kinds of food, they might also be eating at different times — which makes things even harder.

Do I Fill My Hamster’s Food Bowl Every Time It’s Empty?

The short answer is no, you shouldn’t fill up the bowl every time it’s empty. Once a day is perfectly nornal.

Hamsters are small animals and they need to eat small amounts of food at a time. Hamsters should be fed fresh foods as much as possible, but if your hamster is used to eating commercial food, then you can feed them that too.

Hamsters don’t require a lot of food and overfeeding them can cause health issues and even death for your pet.

If you only have one or two hamsters and you want to keep them healthy, then I would suggest not filling their bowls all the way up with food every time they are empty.

It will make them gain weight quickly and become overweight or obese which can cause a number of health problems for your pet including diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes), heart disease, and even cancer.

Boredom leads to overeating when there is nothing else to do in a cage that doesn’t provide enough stimulation for these little guys so they turn to eat as an easy form of entertainment.

My Hamster Won’t Eat His Whole Bowl

Here are some possible reasons why your hamster may not be eating his whole bowl:

1. He’s full

As you can probably guess, this is the most common reason why your hamster might not eat his entire bowl of food. If he’s full, he won’t want to eat more food and will stop eating before he feels uncomfortable.

This is important because over-eating can cause health problems for your hamster, especially if he eats too much high-calorie food.

If your hamster has already eaten his fill of water during the day, then you’ll want to make sure that you’re giving him a small meal at night so that he doesn’t get hungry during the night and start nibbling on things that aren’t safe for him.

2. You’re not feeding enough variety

This is common with younger hamsters, who need to be fed a diet rich in nutrition every day. If your hamster is young, try switching up the food types you give them (for example, instead of feeding them just seeds, also feed them some fresh vegetables or fruit).

3. Your hamster has health problems

If your hamster isn’t eating for two days straight or has lost interest in its food altogether, this could mean that it has an illness or injury that needs to be treated by a vet.

If your hamster is only eating a few pellets or seeds and not drinking water, there’s a good chance she’s sick. The first thing you should do is get her to the vet. If your vet can’t see her right away, call around to find another one who will, it’s worth it.

4. Digestive issues

Hamsters have very short digestive tracts, which means they have fewer enzymes to digest their food than other rodents do.

This means that if your hamster eats something that doesn’t agree with him, his digestive system will have more trouble breaking down that food into nutrients that can be absorbed into his bloodstream.

If your hamster seems constipated (has hard stools), this could indicate that his digestive tract is having trouble processing food properly, which could also cause him to lose interest in eating altogether.

5. Dental problems

It’s possible that your hamster isn’t eating because it has a dental problem. If you notice your hamster is having trouble chewing its food, or if it seems to be in pain when it eats, take it to the vet immediately. Dental problems can be serious and even fatal if left untreated.

Conclusion

It is better to feed your dwarf hamster small portions of food several times a day than one large portion once a day. This will help keep the food from spoiling and also help to reduce obesity, diabetes, and other diseases in dwarf hamsters.

How to Get Hamster to Stop Putting Bedding and Food in Wheel?

How to Get Hamster to Stop Putting Bedding and Food in Wheel?

Why Does My Hamster Keep Putting Food in Her Wheel?

If you have a hamster, that’s stuffing its bedding and food into its wheel, there are a few things you can do to get them to stop.

  • First, make sure that they have plenty of other places to put their bedding and food, like tunnels or hutches.
  • Second, try giving them smaller pieces of bedding and food so that they can’t fit as much into their wheel.
  • Finally, if all else fails, you can try removing their wheel altogether.

Also, if your hamster is putting bedding and food in their wheel, it’s likely because they are bored. Try adding new toys and enrichments to their cage to keep them occupied. This could include tunnels, climbing toys, and foraging toys.

You can also try giving them smaller amounts of food more often throughout the day instead of one large meal. If your hamster is still putting bedding and food in their wheel after trying these tips, consult with a veterinarian to rule out any medical causes.

How Do I Stop My Hamster Wheel Addiction?

When a hamster becomes addicted to its wheel, it will exercise to the point of exhaustion and may even forego eating and drinking.

Hamsters are naturally active animals and require a lot of exercises. This can be in the form of running on the wheel, which is a great way for them to stay in shape.

However, it’s important to make sure that the wheel is the right size for your hamster. If it’s too small, they may not be able to use it properly and could hurt themselves. But, how do I stop my hamster wheel addiction?

There are several reasons why your hamster may have become addicted to excessive running. Initially, hamsters are natural runners and may simply enjoy the activity. Running may help your hamster relieve boredom or stress. Finally, excessive running may be a sign of illness, so it’s important to take your hamster to the vet to rule out any health problems.

Instinct: Hamsters are fascinating creatures and are known to run for miles in the wild in search of food. However, this natural activity can become problematic if your domestic hamster has no other way to spend its energy. If you have an active hamster, it is important to provide it with opportunities to burn off energy, such as a hamster wheel. Otherwise, your hamster may become restless and destructive.

No Toys or Boredom: A bored hamster is a restless hamster. If you want your hamster to be happy and healthy, you need to provide it with a wide selection of toys to keep it entertained. Tunnels, ladders, and toys for burrowing, climbing, and chewing are all great options. By providing your hamster with a variety of toys, you’ll help it stay active and avoid boredom.

How Long Do Hamsters Run on Their Wheel at Night?

Hamsters usually run between 4 to 6 hours every night. Depending on age, gender, and physical condition, some hamster owners report running times as high as 8 or 9 hours.

However, it is important to note that hamsters are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. So, while your hamster may run on their wheel at night, it may also take several naps throughout the day.

Do Hamsters Need a Wheel at Night?

Hamsters are nocturnal creatures, so they’re more active at night. This means that they need access to a wheel at night so they can get the exercise they need. Removing the wheel will cause your hamster to become obese and unhappy.

Are Wheels Bad for Hamsters?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as it depends on the individual hamster. Some hamsters enjoy running on wheels while others do not. If your hamster is not showing interest in running on a wheel, it is likely best to not put one in its cage.

However, if your hamster enjoys running on a wheel, it can be a great way for it to get exercise. Wire-style wheels are not the best option for hamsters. They can get their legs and feet caught in the spaces, which can lead to injuries.

The wire can also wear down their nails. If you choose to get a wire wheel, make sure it is the right size for your hamster and that the wire is spaced far enough apart to avoid any potential accidents.

Why Is My Hamster Putting Bedding in His Tubes?

One of the main reasons that hamsters fill their tubes with bedding is for protection. By doing this, they can create a safe and secure space for themselves where they can feel comfortable and relaxed. Additionally, the bedding also provides them with a place to rest and sleep comfortably.

Why Does My Hamster Put Bedding in Her Food Bowl?

There are a few reasons your hamster may put bedding in her food bowl. One possibility is that she’s looking for a place to store her food. Hamsters are known to hoard food, so this behavior may be natural for her.

Another possibility is that she’s trying to make a soft spot to sleep in. If your hamster’s cage doesn’t have a soft bedding area, she may be trying to create one.

Finally, it could be a sign that she’s not happy with her food. If you’ve recently changed her food or she’s not getting enough of a certain nutrient, she may be trying to tell you that she’s. not happy with her current diet.

Do Hamsters Run when Stressed?

Hamsters are known to run when they are stressed. This is because they are trying to escape their stressors. When hamsters are in the wild, they will run away from predators or other animals that are threatening them.

This is a natural instinct that helps them survive. In captivity, hamsters may run when they feel threatened by their owner or other animals in the home. This can be a sign that the hamster is not feeling safe and is trying to escape.

Finally

In conclusion, make sure you keep your hamster’s wheel clean and free of food. Also, make sure they have other toys to play with.

How Bad Do Syrian Hamsters Smell?

How Bad Do Syrian Hamsters Smell?

Before you want to buy a Syrian hamster, a question may pop up in your mind about how bad does a Syrian hamster smell? First, let me tell you that all hamsters smell, some hamsters smell more than other hamsters. However, I have done complete research on how bad does Syrian hamsters smell, and here’s what I know:

Syrian hamsters are not as smelly as other hamster breeds, but they still have their own unique odor! Compared to male Syrian hamsters, female Syrian hamsters smell more musky and sweet at the same time!

When a female Syrian hamster goes into heat, her scent glands swell up and produce an oily secretion that mainly produces a musky smell.

How Can You Prevent Your Hamster From Smelling Bad?

There are many ways to prevent your Syrian hamster from smelling bad! Following are the few ways you can follow:

Clean Their Cage More Often: Syrian hamsters can smell worse if they live in an uncleaned cage. Therefore cleaning the cage is necessary if you don’t want a smelly hamster (clean at least twice a week).

Use An Air Purifier: Sometimes, Syrian hamsters can produce an unpleasant smell when they go into heat. So to keep the small under control, you can use an air purifier.

Change Bedding: hamster does not go to the toilet; they release their waste (feast & Urine) in their breeding. Therefore it is necessary to clean their Bedding if you don’t want a small hamster. Always make sure you change its Bedding and clean out the cage once per week.

Note- Do not bathe your Syrian hamster to get rid of smells. Syrian hamsters will die if you give them baths more often. Instead, you can use wet tissue paper to clean your hamster coat.

My Hamster Smells Like Pee What Should I Do?

If your hamster smells like pee, then you should clean their cage more often! Uncleaned hamster cage and Bedding is the main reason your hamster smell like pee.

Therefore to eliminate urine smells from your hamster’s body, change their Bedding more often. I would suggest using odor control bedding and Lysol wipes to clean their cage.

Can I Wash My Syrian Hamster?

That’s a question we get asked quite often. But the answer is no, you should never bathe your hamster. In fact, the only time a hamster will need a bath is if they fall into something dirty and smelly! But you have to dry them up using a hairdryer instantly. This is because hamster cannot regulate their body temperature well until they are completely dry.

A hamster has very sensitive skin that can easily become irritated or cause infections. In addition, a bath will remove the natural oils that help to protect the skin and is also stressful for them as they are not used to it.

If your hamster gets wet and you don’t have a hairdryer, keep them under the sun to accelerate the drying process. Towel dry your pet in all the necessary body areas, including between the toes and under the arms, until they stop feeling cold and damp.

Summary on How Bad Do Syrian Hamsters Smell

The best way to avoid your hamster smelling is through good hygiene practices. Clean the cage twice a week by removing all of the Bedding and rinsing it in hot water with vinegar or bleach, changing food dishes if needed, remove any old poop piles from their wheel or other sleeping areas vacuum out any dust bunnies that accumulate on shelves where they sleep. If you are looking for more long-term solutions, try an odor eliminator spray like Febreeze, which can be used daily without harming them.

What Nuts Are Good For Hamsters?

What Nuts Are Good For Hamsters

Nuts are extremely nutritious for hamsters. It is high in protein, has healthy fats, and provides a lot of energy to the hamsters! However, if you have a hamster, a question may arise in your mind, what nuts are good for hamsters? I have researched the following topic and find the following nuts that are good for hamsters:

Almonds

Almonds are a good source of protein, fiber, and vitamin E. They have been known to promote healthy blood flow in humans, but what about hamsters? Almonds may be even more beneficial for hamsters because they contain an amino acid called L-arginine, which has been shown to improve cardiovascular function in rodents. It means that this nut is a great choice for your furry friend! Only provide roasted almonds to your hamster; raw almonds can cause stomach upset.

Peanuts

This is also a great option for your hamster. This nut contains a good amount of protein, iron, magnesium and fiber. You can feed your hamster peanuts either raw or roasted, but what is the difference? First off, you should know that roasting nuts may remove some of their beneficial nutrients, so feed them raw peanuts if possible.

Cashews

Cashew nuts are also an option, although they contain more fat than other types of nuts. A small amount of cashews in your hamster meal can make your hamster healthy. If you decide to give this to your furry friend, try not to overdo it, as cashews are energy-packed.

Macadamia Nuts

Another type of energy-packed nut is macadamias and what’s good is that they’re also a great source of protein. They have been shown to be extremely nutritious in hamsters, so you might want to include this one into your pet’s diet more often!

Pecans

There are tons of benefits for both humans and rodents when it comes to pecans; this nut can improve heart health, increased immunity, nerve support etc… While not all these nutrients may relate directly to your furry friend, we know that the antioxidant compounds found in pecans can help protect cells from free radical damage, which means healthier cells overall (and what isn’t better than healthy cells?!)

Walnuts

Yet another type of nut with antioxidants, like I was saying earlier! These nuts are also high in protein, fiber and omega-three fatty acids. These are all nutrients that your hamster may benefit from!

Pistachios

Pistachios have not been studied extensively, but little evidence indicates that they’re beneficial to rodent health. It is a good source of vitamin B, potassium and magnesium, which can help improve rodents’ cardiovascular function, so you might want to include this nut into the diet more often!

Besides the nuts mentioned above, many types of nuts and beans are unsafe for hamsters. Hamsters cannot eat most types of beans (kidney beans, red beans, white beans) and most types of soybeans.

How Often Should I Feed My Hamster Nuts?

Nuts are a very healthy snack choice for your hamster to have. How often you give them the nuts really depends on what type of food they will be eating when you feed it to them. For example, if you are feeding them a bowl of seeds and grains, this is already included in their diet, so there isn’t much need to add more protein-rich foods. The only time that adding some extra protein would be okay would be during breeding or pregnancy times where both mommy and daddy hamsters require high amounts of protein within their diets. If you decide to give your hamster nuts whenever they want, make sure not to overfeed it.

Can Hamsters Eat Hazelnuts?

Hazelnuts nuts contain lots of facts, so it should not be given to the hamsters regularly. Too much fats in the hamster diets can cause many health problems such as obesity, heart problems, etc. So give your hamster only 1-2 pieces of hazelnuts per week.

Can I Give My Hamster Mixed Nuts?

Mixed Nuts are also bad for your pet, even in small amounts, because they contain many different types of beans and nuts with added flavor, which can cause stomach problems in rodents! Also, it is important to know that giving too much fat can be dangerous as it may lead to obesity and other health issues!

Did I Answer Everything You Want To Know About What Nuts Are Good For Hamsters?

You can give your hamster different types of nuts, but it’s best to research the specific types of nuts before giving them any. It is also important to remember that you should not feed too many high-fat foods like nuts, because they are very caloric and may lead to obesity or diabetes in hamsters. One type of nut per day is usually enough for a small rodent. Rodents have different nutritional needs based on their size so make sure you do some research about what kind of food would be suitable for one before feeding it anything without consulting with an expert first!
